Purpose of the Programme

The Diploma Programme in Maritime Operations and Sustainable Development is designed to qualify participants to undertake management-level responsibilities, both on board ships and within shore-based organizations, related to the operation and maintenance of technical systems and installations. This includes ensuring that such systems and installations are operated optimally with regard to safety, operational efficiency, and environmental considerations.

The programme develops participants’ competencies with a particular focus on processes related to sustainable development, as well as the operational and energy optimization of maritime systems and installations.

The Diploma Programme in Maritime Operations and Sustainable Development prepares participants for the modern operation of maritime facilities and systems while addressing current and future environmental requirements within the maritime industry. The programme equips graduates with the competencies required for interdisciplinary collaboration and enables them to contribute to sustainable development within maritime organizations from technological, managerial, and sustainability perspectives, both nationally and internationally.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide graduates with the competencies needed to address complex challenges and problem-solving tasks from both operational and managerial perspectives within the maritime sector.

Mandatory Modules

Maritime Operations

This module enables students to develop competencies that support participation in project organizations working with the development and implementation of sustainable technical solutions for ships and maritime installations.

The module focuses on both the optimal operation of existing technical systems and the implementation of technical solutions through vessel retrofitting and newbuilding projects.

Leadership Theory and Maritime Management

This module equips students with the competencies required to assume responsibility for personnel management in the operation of maritime facilities and installations, with due consideration for safety, quality, and environmental requirements.

Sustainable Development in a Maritime Organization

This module prepares students to implement sustainability projects within maritime organizations, including managing processes related to change management and project management.

Elective Modules

Students are required to select three elective modules.

Innovation and Efficiency

This module equips students with the competencies required to participate in and contribute to innovation processes. Students learn how to apply implementation principles and evaluate both ideas and business models in a structured and effective manner.

Maritime Law

This module provides students with the knowledge and skills required to understand and make legal decisions relevant to ship officers and maritime professionals. The module addresses legal considerations relating to the ship, shipowner, charterer, crew, international regulations, and environmental legislation, while taking into account the interests of both the vessel and the maritime organization.

Maintenance Management

This module develops competencies related to maintenance management and provides students with strategic tools that support operational optimization and improved resource utilization from both operational and sustainability perspectives.

Operational Optimization

The purpose of this module is to provide students with the competencies required to understand and apply optimization tools in relation to operational processes and management. Students learn how to optimize work processes on board ships and within maritime organizations.

Entrepreneurship and Globalization

This module provides students with an understanding of how to establish and develop their own business. The course introduces methods and concepts that support the selection of relevant values and competencies, as well as the development of strategies for branding, marketing, distribution, production, and finance within a global maritime context.

Energy Optimization and Operational Training

The purpose of this module is to provide students with knowledge and practical skills related to energy-efficient ship operations. Students develop the competencies required to operate maritime technical systems in an environmentally optimal manner while taking into account commercial, regulatory, and safety-related considerations.

Programme Structure and Duration

The programme comprises 60 ECTS credits, equivalent to one full-time academic year of study. It is designed as a part-time programme consisting of academically distinct modules and has a nominal duration of two years.

The programme must be completed within six years of the student's initial enrolment. In special circumstances, the institution may grant an exemption from this requirement.

Mandatory Modules – 30 ECTS Credits

Elective Modules – 15 ECTS Credits

Students must complete three elective modules selected from the approved list of electives.

Final Project – 15 ECTS Credits

The programme concludes with a Final Project, through which students demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired throughout the programme to a complex professional challenge within the maritime sector.
