Maritime Academy Programme

SIMAC and UCL University College jointly offer a leadership programme specifically tailored to the maritime sector.

The programme is designed for both shore-based and seagoing personnel and addresses the unique challenges and requirements of the maritime industry. It is developed to support professionals such as marine engineers, navigators, and other maritime specialists in meeting the leadership challenges they encounter in their daily work.

The programme provides practical and relevant knowledge that can be applied directly in the workplace. At the same time, it is designed with a high degree of flexibility, allowing participants to complete the programme while maintaining their professional commitments, including periods at sea.

Mandatory Modules

Mandatory Modules

During the programme, you are required to complete three mandatory modules. These modules provide the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to develop your leadership capabilities and strengthen your understanding of the leadership role.

Leadership in Practice

As a leader, it is essential to understand your own strengths and competencies. This awareness enables you to continue developing as a leader.

The Leadership in Practice module focuses on leadership styles, personal leadership, and the leader’s toolbox. Participants gain practical tools and techniques to better motivate, support, and develop their teams. The module also covers effective leadership and communication, helping participants strengthen and refine their leadership approach.

Organisation and Occupational Psychology

To lead effectively, it is important to understand the people you lead.

The Organisation and Occupational Psychology module provides insight into different personality types, motivation, and employee well-being. Participants learn how to apply occupational psychology tools and methods to support collaboration, engagement, and a positive organizational culture.

Strategic Leadership

Achieving both personal and organizational goals requires a range of practical leadership tools.

The Strategic Leadership module introduces participants to these tools and demonstrates how they can be used to support effective day-to-day operations. Participants learn how to develop leadership processes that translate strategy into practical action, enabling them to grow as leaders and perform their leadership role more effectively.

Elective Modules

Elective Modules

In addition to the mandatory modules, participants are required to complete between two and four elective modules. The elective modules provide an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in areas that are particularly relevant to individual work responsibilities and leadership development.

Examples of available elective modules include:

Intercultural Leadership and Collaboration Processes

When different cultures interact, misunderstandings and conflicts can easily arise.

The Intercultural Leadership and Collaboration Processes module provides participants with the knowledge and tools required to lead employees from diverse cultural backgrounds and to prevent and manage intercultural misunderstandings effectively.

Project Management

Successful project delivery often depends on the effective use of proven management tools and techniques.

The Project Management module introduces participants to these tools through a practical project assignment based on realistic workplace scenarios, enabling them to apply project management principles in a relevant context.

Team Leadership

Effective teamwork requires an understanding of both individual employees and team dynamics.

The Team Leadership module focuses on team culture, interpersonal dynamics, and the leader’s role within the team. Participants gain the knowledge and skills needed to support collaboration and help both the team and the organization achieve their objectives.

Change Management

When organizations undergo change, leadership plays a critical role in maintaining engagement and motivation.

The Change Management module explores the challenges associated with organizational change and provides participants with an understanding of how employees may respond during change processes. Participants learn how to support and facilitate successful change initiatives within their organizations.

Coaching and Conflict Management

Conflicts can arise in any workplace for a variety of reasons.
