GMDSS General Operator’s Certificate (GOC) Revalidation / Refresher

GMDSS General Operator’s Certificate (GOC) Renewal

Purpose and Course Content:

Renewal of the General Operator’s Certificate (GOC) for radio operators in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).

The course concludes with an individual oral examination. Participants are assessed on a pass/fail basis. The examination lasts approximately 45 minutes. A passing result is required in order to renew and obtain the certificate.

Entry Requirements/Target Group:

The course is intended for individuals wishing to renew or revalidate a previously issued certificate.

To participate in the course, participants must:

• Hold a valid GOC certificate, which must be presented at the examination.

Duration:

Self-study combined with 1 day of classroom instruction, concluding with an examination.

Notes:

Upon passing the examination, participants may apply for certificate renewal through the website of the Danish Maritime Authority.

The course is conducted partly in English, and all training materials are provided in English.

The course is conducted in accordance with:

• Executive Order No. 939 of 29 August 2011 on radio examinations and certificates in GMDSS

• The standards set out in the International Maritime Organization STCW Code, Section A-IV/1, regarding radio operators

GMDSS General Operator’s Certificate (GOC) – 2-Week Course

Purpose and Course Content:

The General Operator’s Certificate (GOC) course qualifies participants to serve as radio operators in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) on board ships operating in all sea areas.

The course concludes with an individual oral examination. Participants are assessed on a pass/fail basis. The examination lasts approximately 45 minutes. A passing result is required in order to obtain the certificate.

Entry Requirements/Target Group:

The course is intended for individuals wishing to obtain a radio operator certificate for service on vessels operating in all sea areas.

To participate in the course, applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years of age.

Duration:

10 days (2 weeks)

Notes:

Upon passing the examination, participants may obtain the certificate by applying through the website of the Danish Maritime Authority.

The course is conducted partly in English, and all training materials are provided in English.

The course is conducted in accordance with:

• Executive Order No. 939 of 29 August 2011 on radio examinations and certificates in GMDSS

• The standards set out in the International Maritime Organization STCW Code, Section A-IV/1, regarding radio operators

GMDSS (ROC) 6 days

Purpose and Course Content:

Restricted Operator's Certificate in GMDSS (ROC – Restricted Operator's Certificate)

This course ensures that participants acquire the necessary competencies to operate as radio operators on board vessels navigating in GMDSS Sea Area A1, i.e. areas within the VHF radio coverage of coast stations equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC).

The course includes both theoretical instruction and practical exercises in maritime radio communication, covering:

• Operation of VHF radio equipment and Digital Selective Calling (DSC).

• Distress, urgency and safety communications within GMDSS.

• Use of maritime emergency radio equipment, including EPIRB and SART.

• Reception of Maritime Safety Information (MSI), including via NAVTEX.

• Radio procedures, communication in English and applicable international regulations.

• Handling emergency situations, including the prevention and cancellation of inadvertent distress alerts.

The course concludes with an individual oral examination, including a practical assessment. Participants are assessed on a pass/fail basis. The examination lasts approximately 25 minutes. Participants must pass the examination to qualify for the ROC certificate.

Entry Requirements / Target Group:

The course is intended for individuals wishing to obtain a Restricted Operator's Certificate (ROC) in GMDSS for operations in Sea Area A1.

Participants must be at least 18 years old to be issued the ROC certificate. However, the examination may be taken up to three months before their 18th birthday.

Duration:

3 days of preparation + 3 days of training and examination.

Additional Information / Notes:

Upon successfully passing the examination, participants may apply for their ROC certificate through the Danish Maritime Authority's website.

The ROC certificate is valid for 5 years and may subsequently be renewed by submitting an application to the Danish Maritime Authority.

The course is conducted in Danish. However, the use of English is included as an integral part of maritime radio communication training.

The course is conducted in accordance with:

• Danish Executive Order No. 516 of 15 May 2025 on Radio Examinations and Certificates in GMDSS.

• STCW Code, Section A-IV/2 – Standards regarding radio operators.

• ITU Radio Regulations, Article 47.
