SIMAC Training has published books on operational leadership, written by two psychologists.

SIMAC Training has published two operational leadership books in collaboration with Doulgerof & Lamberg, aimed at maritime officers.

• The Bridge Emergency Preparedness Manual
  

• The Engine Room Emergency Preparedness Manual

The content of the books complies with several IMO STCW standards, including Table A-II/1, Table A-II/2, A-III/3, Table A-V/2-2, and Table A-VI/1-4.

The books are targeted at either the bridge or the engine room. The version is selected upon registration.

The books

The content consists of condensed practical experience from operational leadership contexts combined with research-based knowledge of human behavior in emergency situations. The books provide accessible, manual-based guidance for professionals working in operational environments characterized by risk and unpredictability, where situations may escalate into critical incidents.

• Before the emergency, the reader is introduced to key psychological and crew-related factors relevant in operational settings. These include stress and stress reduction, situational awareness and decision-making, sign-on talks, meeting management, the use of exercises as leadership tools, staff development, time-outs, and problem-solving tools.

• During the emergency, the reader is introduced to hands-on tools such as closed-loop communication and crisis communication, regaining self-control and control over others, and managing panic in groups.

• After the emergency, the reader is introduced to hands-on tools related to psychological first aid, handling potential fatalities on board, conducting psychological defusing as a leadership tool, and the structure of lessons-learned meetings.

The authors

One of the authors, Ivan Doulgerof, is a former Chief Psychologist at the Red Cross, Lead External Psychologist at Maersk Training A/S, and a Major in the Army Reserve. The other author, Frank Lamberg Nielsen, holds a Master Mariner certificate. He is also a former Senior Consultant at Maersk Training A/S and a First Lieutenant in the Army Reserve.

The authors have worked with operational maritime leaders for more than two decades and have been responsible for designing highly specialized Human Factors and Team Enhancement programs for one of the world’s leading maritime training organizations.
