How to Revalidate Your Certificate
1. Apply to the Danish Maritime Authority
Your first step is to contact the Danish Maritime Authority, as they determine which examinations and requirements apply to your revalidation.
The Danish Maritime Authority will carry out an individual assessment of your application and determine which examinations you must pass. You will receive the outcome of this assessment directly from the Authority.
2. Book Your Examination
Once you know your examination requirements and have completed any required fire-fighting or maritime safety courses, you can book your final examination with SIMAC Training.
When booking, please remember to attach the letter received from the Danish Maritime Authority.
Please note that waiting times may occur during certain periods of the year, so early booking is recommended.
3. Examination Requirements
Based on the individual assessment carried out by the Danish Maritime Authority, you will be required to complete a number of examination requirements.
You can identify your specific requirements from the letter issued by the Authority.
You may revalidate your certificate at the same level as, or at a lower level than, your previous certificate of competency.

4. Examination Preparation
Preparation for the examination is based on self-study.
Based on SIMAC Training’s experience, preparation typically requires approximately three weeks, depending on your examination requirements and whether exemptions have been granted by the Danish Maritime Authority.
A reading list containing the required literature is available. Some publications must be obtained by the candidate, while others are available through the SIMAC library.
Use the Library
You are welcome to use SIMAC’s library, the Open Learning Center, to prepare for your examination.
Access is available during normal opening hours. Library materials must remain on site, and participants should expect to spend approximately four hours using the library resources.
Simulator Training
If you would like to familiarise yourself with the engine room simulator before your examination, SIMAC Training offers 1–2 hours of simulator practice immediately prior to the examination.
Participants receive a short introduction followed by the opportunity to practise independently before the revalidation examination. This preparation is highly recommended.
Simulator training is charged according to the applicable simulator rental rate.
5. Take the Examination
The examination is conducted at SIMAC in Svendborg and is held in Danish.
You must bring the following documentation:
The certificate of competency to be revalidated (or other valid photo identification)
A valid medical certificate for seafarers
Certificates for any courses required by the Danish Maritime Authority (e.g. fire-fighting, proficiency in survival craft, radio courses, etc.)
Any notification from the Danish Maritime Authority regarding exemptions from examination requirements or additional examination requirements
The original letter from the Danish Maritime Authority specifying your examination requirements
6. After the Examination
SIMAC Training reports the examination result to the Danish Maritime Authority, which is responsible for issuing the new certificate of competency.
The renewed certificate will be sent directly to you by the Danish Maritime Authority.
